Idris Elba “I just don’t want to be the black James Bond”

Onlangs onthulde Sony -ongewild- dat Idris Elba de volgende James Bond zou moeten worden. Op het internet kwamen er tientallen discussies op gang aangezien Elba de eerste donkere 007 zou worden. Voorstanders vinden een donkere Bond anno 2014 een welkome verandering terwijl de tegenstanders krampachtig vasthouden aan het ideaalbeeld van de traditionele Bond als gecreëerd door Ian Fleming.

“James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period,” zegt de Amerikaanse radio presentator Rush Limbaugh. “That is who James Bond is, was. But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland. But that’s not who James Bond is and I know it’s racist to probably point this out.”

Elba reageert nogal rustig op de hele discussie, hij tweet: “Isn’t 007 supposed to handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot! Happy New year people,” én tegen NPR vertelde hij in 2011: “I just don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t [just] the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t [just] the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”
