Ring of Fire is nearby!

Aankomende dinsdag kunnen we getuige zijn van een uniek natuurverschijnsel. Bij de eerste Solar Eclipse van 2014 zal de zon transformeren in een Ring Of Fire. Bij deze ringvormige zonsverduistering passeert de maan de zon, waardoor slechts een gouden ring om de maan te zien is. Kunnen we dat vanuit ons dakraampje bekijken? Nope. Tuesday’s solar eclipse is known as an “annular” — rather than “total” — lunar eclipse. That’s because Tuesday’s eclipse will occur when the moon is close to its farthest distance from the Earth, making it too small to cover the sun completely. The resulting effect looks like a ring of fire, called an “annulus,” appears around the silhouette of the moon.

De meeste mensen zullen het verschijnsel niet gaan meemaken. Behalve als je op een klein deel van Antartica (heel toevallig) woont. Delen van de Ring Of Fire zijn nog wel zichtbaar op andere locaties, maar die bevinden zich in de Oceaan. Mocht je daar wonen (heel toevallig)… Wil je toch op jacht gaan om er iets van te zien, wees dan gewaarschuwd. The Huffington Post schrijft dat het bekijken van de Eclipse bijzonder gevaarlijk is voor het blote oog.

Partial solar eclipses have the greatest potential for eye damage because at no time is the sun completely covered by the moon. The sun itself is no more dangerous during an eclipse. The danger comes from people’s desire to look at it, to overcome the natural reflex that forces us to look away from the sun.
