Kunstenaar gaat maand in virtuele wereld leven

Terwijl Facebook achter de schermen druk bezig is met de ontwikkeling van een consumenten-vriendelijke Oculust Rift reality headset, besluit kunstenaar Mark Farid een maand lang in een virtuele wereld te gaan leven (althans, dit gaat hij proberen). Zijn kunstwerk zal Seeing I gaan heten en het betekent dat hij een noise cancelling headphones + VR headset gaat dragen waardoor hij een maand leeft in het leven van een ander persoon.

Al eerder in het jaar probeerde Farid in Arabyte Gallery 24 uur in een virtuele wereld te leven. Personeel bleef hier constant aanwezig om hem cornflakes met een lepel in zijn mond te voeren.

“It’s to see if who we are is an individual identity, or if there is just a cultural identity that kind of takes us on,” zegt Farid. “I’ve grown up in the city my whole life. So everything that I’ve seen — the square gardens that we have, the tree that’s planted in that specific place, the way the wind travels down the road … all of that is artificially created. Every experience that we’re having is synthetic.”
