En hierom koos Steph Curry voor Under Armour

Vorig jaar leek het onontkoombaar dat Nike en Steph Curry een gigantische samenwerking zouden aankondigen. Nike staat er natuurlijk om bekend om grote basketbal spelers te tekenen/sponsoren voor meerdere jaren voor astronomische bedragen. Toch koos multi-talent én één van de meest spraakmakende spelers van deze tijd in de NBA voor een partnership met Under Armour. But why?

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat Steph Curry populairder dan ooit is. Het perfecte moment voor Nike om Curry vast te leggen voor een miljoenenbedrag. Zou je denken. Alles leek erop dat Curry voor Nike zou gaan. In zijn eerste vier seizoenen in de NBA droeg hij bijvoorbeeld altijd Nike schoenen. Uiteindelijk week Curry van het plan af en tekende bij Under Armour voor minder dan $4 miljoen. Tot 2024 tekende hij bij UA. En dit was nog voor zijn grote doorbraak.

Als ambassadeur van Nike had hij zich kunnen scharen bij grootheden als Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant en LeBron James voor tientallen miljoenen. In een interview met ESPN heeft de vader van Curry (Dell) aangegeven waarom zijn zoon toch voor UA heeft gekozen:

– De vice president van Nike, Nico Harrison, sprak de naam van Curry verkeerd uit tijdens een belangrijke presentatie. Dit toont natuurlijk desinteresse in de atleet.

– Nike zou Curry op veel minder waarde hebben ingeschat dan hij daadwerkelijk zou zijn.

Sinds Curry heeft getekend bij UA is het zowel de speler als Under Armour voor de wind gegaan. Zo won Curry de league MVP titel, drie All-Star games en een NBA finale. Dit terwijl hij het record voor driepunters aan flarden schoot én hij potentieel topscorer aller tijden kan worden. Voor UA zijn de cijfers met 95% gestegen. Vooral Curry’s eigen Curry Two schoen doet het goed.

Gemiste kans Nike.

Ronda Rousey vs Miesha Tate (rematch)

UFC 196 was één van de meest bizarre avonden in de historie van de UFC. Niet alleen werd Conor McGregor verslagen door Nate Diaz, maar kreeg ook titelverdedigster Holly Holm het voor de kiezen door Miesha Tate. Holm versloeg al eerder op spectaculaire wijze Ronda Rousey en moest haar titel voor het eerst verdedigen. Tate kwam, zag en overwon. Nu is bekend gemaakt dat Ronda Rousey het wederom zal opnemen tegen Miesha Tate (die ze eerder al versloeg). Dana White: “I think that Ronda now will now fight Miesha Tate for the title – that’s what’s gonna happen. That’s what I said before this fight even happened. Whoever wins tonight will fight Ronda for the title.” Rousey is aan, ze sms-te terug naar White: “Looks like I gotta get back to work.”

Gaat Floyd Mayweather terugkeren voor Fight #50?

Het zal niet de eerste keer zijn dat een bokser de verleiding niet kan weerstaan om terug te keren in de ring nadat hij met pensioen is gegaan. Al maanden na het definitief vaarwel zeggen tegen de sport heeft Floyd Mayweather al weer de kriebels om terug te keren in de ring. Floyd Mayweather Jr. sprak met Fight Hype over zijn onverslagen status en het feit dat hij het in zijn macht heeft om terug te keren: “I can easily put a halt on that fight,” legt de 38-jarige wereldkampioen uit “if I chose to call Mr. Garcia, Danny Garcia’s dad, if I chose to call him and say, ‘You know what, sir, you’re a hell of a trainer, your son’s a hell of a fighter, he’s an undefeated champion, I’m an undefeated champion, and I think it would be great for me and your son both to make a lot of money. And like I said before, you’re very outspoken, my dad is very outspoken; it would be good for me to come back for number 50 and fight the undefeated Danny Garcia, you know, at the MGM Grand.’ You know, since Danny Garcia is undefeated and he’s very explosive, he’s a very good fighter, and he really represents Puerto Rico the same way that Trinidad did. Even though he’s from Philadelphia, he represents the red, white, and blue for Puerto Rico. I’ll go over to the MGM Grand and say, ‘You know what? We need a venue also,’ and we’ll see. Because if I’m not mistaken, I fought Canelo, right, and then Danny Garcia fought Amir Khan, and we’re both undefeated, so who do you want to see? Do you want to see them or do you want to see us? I’m just saying.”

Zou Mayweather echt weer terug willen keren? Misschien om de miljardair-status binnen te halen?

Een eerbetoon aan Kobe Bryant (by Nike)

Kobe Bryant is één van de meest legendarische basketbal-spelers ooit. Zijn bizarre lenigheid leverde hem al snel de bijnaam ‘the Black Cobra’ op en niet voor niets werd Kobe ook opgenomen in the Hall of Fame. Zijn samenwerkingen met Nike leverde het merk de swoosh veel positieve publiciteit op. Nu heeft Nike een eerbetoon-video aan Kobe Bryant online geplaatst. De meningen zijn verdeeld…

Wij vinden dat Nike zich er iets te makkelijk van heeft afgemaakt. Do you agree?

Jose Aldo’s coach schrijft open brief over het verlies

Vorige week verloor de ongeslagen kampioen, Jose Aldo, het gevecht tegen Conor McGregor in een bizarre 13 seconden. Het meest aparte is dat McGregor van te voren al kon beschrijven hoe hij Aldo zou verslaan, in de eerste ronde met een goede tik tegen de zijkant van het hoofd. Volgens McGregor is het de Law of Attraction. Anyhow, de coach van Jose Aldo heeft naar aanleiding van zijn grote verlies een brief geschreven aan de wereld:

I have a deep sense of loss at this moment. Not only because of Jose Aldo’s belt, but mainly because of the lack of respect to our great champion, who maintained the UFC belt for four years and seven months, for seven fights (not counting his almost two years and three fights with the WEC title). I got back (to Brazil) and saw comments from people that certainly don’t know anything about fighting. And if they do, they never got anywhere, because those who achieved something in our sport know how hard is to compete at the highest level, against athletes from all over the world, and defeat them for many years.

When Brazil had no other champion, in a tense moment, Aldo maintained his title. After that, two other Brazilians joined him, maintaining the fame and recognition of the country in MMA. The only thing I ask everyone is respect to our great champion. For those who say it was fixed, I’d rather not comment, because they don’t deserve time and attention.

Last Saturday, Jose Aldo lost his belt in a fight in which he couldn’t show how well trained and prepared psychologically he was. There was no taunting that could enter his head, there was no technical failure, just an unusual blow. A blow like that, connecting in someone’s chin while moving forward, isn’t something that happens all the time. But it has happened with us. If it was the opposite, with McGregor being punched in the chin and Aldo in the eyebrow, we would be calling Aldo a superchampion today, the best of all times, but this is how sports are. Better luck for McGregor, who won and, therefore, is the new champion.

We need to understand that Jose Aldo is a human being subject to defeats, like any other. Those who show up criticizing him should think: this guy came from Manaus to Rio with nothing, to live in a gym, sleep on the mat, and wake up late so he wouldn’t starve since he had no money to have breakfast. He got where he were, always believing he would be a champion, and became one, due to hard work and dedication. The people’s champion.

Would those who are out there criticizing, talking about embarrassment, have the courage to do what he did? I bet not. If they did, they would know how hard is to win in a country where it’s rare to have support to sports. My message to critics is this: get up from the chair, get out from the computer, drop the phone, and do better. We need more people like Aldo and less critics from the couch.
